Another day, another Wordle puzzle, but if you’re stuck solving this one we’ve got some great clues to get you over the line.
Linguistics expert Noël Wolf shared with Newsweek some strategies for ensuring your winning streak.
“Be strategic with your second guess,” she said. “As hard as it might seem—especially if you have a few correct letters in your first word—using a completely separate set of letters, where possible, will help eliminate more possibilities in fewer guesses.”
“For example, If your first Wordle guess is ‘crane’ and you discover that C and R are correct, instead of guessing a word like ‘cross,’ try a different word like ‘plumb,'” Wolf explained. “This will use new letters and explore different vowel placements, increasing your chances of narrowing down the possibilities.”
Another expert, Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, also shared his thoughts on how to win with Newsweek.
“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting letter chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting off with letters that include commonly used vowels, for example, ‘e’ and ‘a’, consonants such as ‘r’ and ‘t’, and sound sequences might be helpful.
“Choosing a word that starts with ‘q’, ‘z’, ‘j’, or ‘x’, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”
How to Play ‘Wordle’
Players have to solve a mystery five-letter word by inputting a word in the New York Times Games app or website. Then after their first guess, players must use a process of elimination to work out the answer.
They’re helped along with a color-tiled system, with green showing the letter does appear in the word, yellow indicates the letter is in the word but just in the wrong spot, and a gray tile means that letter does not appear at all.

The answer to Monday’s Wordle is “Shaky.”
According to Merriam-Webster, it can mean “characterized by shakes,” lacking stability, firmness or authority and “somewhat unsound in health.”
Wordle updates every day at midnight in your local time zone, at which point the next puzzle becomes available. Newsweek will be back tomorrow with another round of hints and tips for each new game.
