FULLERTON, Calif.–The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team (6-5, 4-1 Big West) held off Cal State Fullerton on the road in a hard fought 4-3 win. Hawai’i won the doubles point to start the match with the No. 1 duo of Peppi Ramstedt and Sheena Masuda outlasting the Titans’ Sein Myoung and Milena Gevorgyan in a marathon match that ended in a tiebreaker. Cal State Fullerton took a 2-1 lead, but the ‘Bows battled back with three-straight singles victories by No. 3 Nikola Homolkova, No. 6 Joelle Lanz and No. 5 Makeilah Nepomuceno who clinched the match with a three-set win.
In doubles, UH’s No. 2 pair of Ana Vilcek and Homolkova cruised to a 6-1 win over the Titans’ Mariia Nikitash and Diana Yanotowskaya, But on the No. 3 court, CSF’s Seha Yu and Kaytlin Taylor held off UH’s Hannah Galindo and Niepomuceno by a break, 7-5. UH’s No. 1 duo of Ramsted and Masuda then edged out the Titans’ Myoung and Gevorgyan by the thinnest of margins, 7-6 (7-5).
The Titans came out hot, winning the first two singles matches in straight sets on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. But then UH started to turn the tide. On the No. 3 court Homolkova was able to win her first set in a tie-breaker before pulling away in the second frame for the 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Yanotovskaya to tie the match at 2-2. UH’s No. 6 Lanz dropped her first set but bounced back to win the second before holding off Kaytlin Taylor for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win to give UH a 3-2 lead.
UH’s No. 5 Nepomuceno captured her first set against CSF’s Gevorgyan, but fell short in the second to force a third set. Nepomuceno was able to fight for the clinching win with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory that clinched the match for UH at 4-2.
In the final match, UH’s No. 4 Emma Forgac forced a third set after fighteing to win the second set in a tie-breaker, but CSF’s Mariia Nikitash hung on for the win, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
The Rainbow Wahine remain on the mainland as they conclude their three-match roadtrip at 53rd-ranked Long Beach State (9-2, 2-1 Big West) on Thursday, March 20 at 11:00 a.m. HT at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
