For the second consecutive year and third time in the last four seasons, the University of Hawai’i women’s golf team will compete in the Fresno State Classic. This year’s event will be held Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1 at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
The eight-team field will feature three other Big West foes – CSU Bakersfield, CSUN, and UC Riverside in addition to host Fresno State, Portland State, Tarleton State, and Weber State.
Tarleton State is the highest ranked team in the field at No. 115 followed by UC Riverside (#125) and UH (#139).
Hawai’i will send a five-member contingent comprised of Emiko Sverduk, Wendy Song, Maline Kraus, Kellie Yamane, and Varnika S. Achanta. Sverduk was UH’s top finisher at last week’s Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, finishing in a tie for 45th place at 5-over 221. Kraus leads the team in scoring average at 74.33 strokes per round.
UH won the Fresno State Classic in 2022, running away with the title by 16 strokes. The Rainbow Wahine finished in a tie for 19th place in last year’s event. Sverduk was the team’s top finisher at 10-over 226 and a tie for 49th place. Yamane and Song also competed and tied for 83rd and 97th, respectively.
Designed by architect David Pfaff and opened in spring of 1995, Copper River Country Club is set up on the undulating terrain of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Participants will play 54 holes over two days, 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday, at the 6,276-yard, par-72 track.
The tournament is the final tune-up for UH before the Big West Championship, April 13-15 in Las Vegas, Nev.
