ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico voters are deciding on four constitutional amendments during 2024’s election. The first two deal with rules tied to property taxes for veterans and their widows.
Constitutional Amendment 1 would expand those tax exemptions to all disabled veterans. Currently, the exemption only applies to people with the most severely debilitating service-related conditions. The numbers are showing a strong percentage of voters are for the amendment.
The second amendment on the ballot would allow honorable discharged veterans to claim a larger property tax exemption, starting this tax year. And, in similar fashion to the first amendment, the numbers are favoring the change.
Constitutional Amendment 3 changes the makeup for the commission that nominates judges for the state supreme and appeals courts, letting the dean of the University of New Mexico’s School of Law pick someone to fill their role on the board. Votes so far are showing this as the closest of the constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Finally, the fourth amendment would allow county commissions to set the salaries of county officers, rather than the state legislature.
