NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The same day Brother Martin announced Chris Biehl was stepping down as head basketball coach, the school named his replacement.
Former Archbishop Shaw head coach Wes Laurendine will take over the Crusaders’ program.
Laurendine has served as the Eagles’ head basketball coach since 2015. He led Shaw to the state championship stage last season but fell to Archbishop Hannan in the Division II Select state final.
Still, Shaw has seen several deep postseason runs under Laurendine with four straight trips to the final four. Something Brother Martin hopes he will replicate with the Crusaders moving forward.
In a release sent to media outlets Monday afternoon, Director of Athletics Mark Wisniewski said, “Wesley has had a tremendous amount of success at Archbishop Shaw; he is a great motivator, and it is evident that he cares deeply about the young men he teaches and coaches. With six state championships in our school’s history, three titles in the last twenty years, and four Top 28 appearances in the last ten years, Coach Laurendine is inheriting one of the most storied basketball programs in the state of Louisiana, and we look forward to that continued success under his leadership.”
Coach Laurendine will officially be introduced as Brother Martin’s newest head basketball coach on Friday, March 28, at 3:15 p.m.
