BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As the weather gets cooler, many people may not be visiting local parks as often as during the summer. However, a few critters are still bound to show up.
Warren County Parks officials confirm snakes are mostly found near the lake at Basil Griffin Park, the outdoor theater area at the park, or at Phil Moore Park.
The most common types of snakes found are rat snakes, which are non-venomous. However, there is the occasional copperhead that will show up which IS venomous.
Once a snake is found, Warren County Parks staff will put up signs for about 2 to 4 weeks… “Just to let people know ‘Hey, if you’re down here fishing or if you’re walking around, just pay attention to where you’re stepping…’ and if you do see a snake… the simple rules are don’t engage with the snake, don’t mess with the snake. Every time that we’ve had a snake encounter here, with the exception of just a very few, the snakes just slither away,” Chris Kummer, WCPR’s director, says.
Kummer says these snakes help control the rodent population and the environment of the parks, but he urges if you do see a snake, be sure to contact the Warren County Parks and Rec office, and avoid the snake.
