Rain chances may ramp up just in time for Halloween
After a pleasant final weekend of October with sunshine and afternoon highs in the 60s it was a quiet start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky. With more abundant sunshine and winds shifting around to the south, temperatures responded nicely across the board with most locations ending up in the low to mid-70s by the end of the day. This upward trend in temperatures will continue in the coming days as we finish out the month later this week.
Tuesday should feature more of the same with tranquil conditions persisting around the region. With high pressure sitting off to our east, a nice southerly flow combined with additional sunshine should push afternoon highs all the way into the upper 70s, which is nearly 15 degrees above average for the end of October. All the sunshine should really allow the nearly peak fall colors to pop so enjoy that while it lasts.
Heading into the mid-week the unseasonably warm air will hang around as a frontal system makes a run for the Ohio Valley. Winds will pick up out of the southwest with gusts 20 to 25 miles per hour, helping to push afternoon highs into the upper 70s to even low 80s! While these temperatures should be just below record highs it may be close if we overachieve. By Halloween the frontal boundary should move into the area and with some legitimate moisture associated with it we are looking at occasional rain and a few rumbles of thunder on Thursday. Afternoon highs will still reach the mid-70s but more importantly it may be damp for trick or treating on Thursday evening so plan on that at this point. This should be our best chance of widespread rain in about a month so we’ll take that part of it although the timing could be better with the rain expected on Halloween.
The front will sweep through with some lingering showers into Friday as temperatures back off a bit into the mid-60s for afternoon highs as we kick off the new month. The first weekend of November is looking pretty nice as drier air builds into the commonwealth so expect a return of sunshine and afternoon highs climbing back into the low-70s. Another frontal system may impact the area toward the end of the weekend but those rain chances may hold off until next Monday. Don’t forget that Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 am this Sunday morning so it’s time to “fall back” as clocks will go back 1 hour at that time. This will mean an earlier sunrise and sunset beginning Sunday! Don’t forget to check the batteries in your snoke detectors as a typical reminder during the time change.
