SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Hawai’i women’s soccer team saw its program-record nine-match unbeaten streak come to an end Thursday in a 3-1 loss at Cal Poly.
Despite dropping their first match since Sept. 8, the Rainbow Wahine remained atop the Big West table with their 19 points, three clear of second-place UC Santa Barbara with two matches remaining. The ‘Bows have a chance to secure the No. 1 seed in the Big West postseason with a win or tie against the Gauchos on Sunday.
After neither team was able to mount much of an attack for the first 25 minutes, the Mustangs took control with a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes of the half. Jessie Halladay put Cal Poly on the board with a penalty kick goal in the 28th minute, before an own goal off a misdirected header on a free kick in the 39th minute made it 2-0 going into halftime.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the board early in the second half when Cate Sheahan headed home her fourth goal of the season off a cross from Zoe Park in the 49th minute to make it 2-1. The Mustangs, however, would answer right back a few minutes later when Brennan Cole headed in a goal off a corner kick in the 54th minute to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Sheahan found the back of the net for the second consecutive match while moving into a tie for the team lead with 12 points on the season. Amber Gilbert led the way with three shot attempts while Sheahan, Brynn Mitchell and Piper Bertani each fired off two shots.
The Rainbow Wahine head down the California Coast to take on UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 2 p.m. HT.
