HARTSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Residents in rural Bartholomew County spent Thursday assessing damage left behind from a Wednesday night storm.
Downed powerlines continued to block some roads in the storm-damaged areas on Thursday.
The Arnold family lost its grain bins, and the tornadic storm demolished grain mills and a barn housing expensive farming equipment destroyed.
The family says it wasn’t the first time they have faced such a costly devastation.
Sarah Arnold, 11, said, “Honestly, I just felt like crying. I mean this has been our farm since before I was born. It’s just always been here. It’s where I grew up. It’s just really hard to see it come down like this.”
Of her family, she said, “They seem fine. But, I know my dad is really stressed. He keeps telling my mom to take his phone so he doesn’t have to deal with the calls and messages.”
Debris littered the landscape, making it a daunting task for the cleanup. However, community members came together to give support in the recovery.
Andrew Jamison, a territory salesperson for Kustom Disaster Recovery & Restoration, was helping with the cleanup of storm damage in the area. “We’ve had straight-line winds with the fence down, trees on houses, and flood damages with the rain coming through. Mostly, wind damage to roofs and structures like barns and fences.”
Jamison offered suggestions for people dealing with storm damage. “Talk to your restoration company. Talk to your insurance adjuster as well, and make sure everyone is communicating, because when it comes to damage like this communication is key when it comes to getting things back where they need to be.”
