Don’t miss the progressive roots reggae, deep grooves and consciousness of Groundation as the band performs live at Ola Brew Co. in Kailua-Kona this weekend.
Experience the signature smooth and emotive vocal delivery of J.Lyn during an intimate, stripped-down acoustic performance this weekend at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea by this emerging singer-songwriter who was a 2022 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee for Alternative Album of the Year.
Learn how laughter and love can help navigate life’s toughest moments through the eyes and experiences in the documentary “Taking Care,” featuring actor/writer/producers Seth Rogan and Lauren Miller Rogan, who were caregivers for Miller Rogan’s mother after she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The film is being shown this weekend at Hawai‘i Island Adult Care in Hilo.
There’s also a couple of St. Patrick’s Day Weekend events planned in Downtown Hilo, including a pub and art crawl and a special concert at Kukuau Studio.

Part of Zonta Fashion Frenzy series, this curated showcase of Hawai‘i Island’s fashion history and its evolution explores the legacy of fashion in Hilo. Witness how clothing has empowered women and reflected the island’s diversity, creativity and innovation through time. Local storyteller Leilehua Yuen will host a special talk about fashion, culture and history March 17.

No. 2 — Groundation live (Kailua-Kona, March 14)

When: 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Location: Ola Brew Co., 74-5598 Luhia St.
Experience the progressive roots reggae, deep grooves and consciousness of this band live — no backing tracks, no click-tracks. This is more than a concert; it’s a celebration of unity, love and creation through music. Nine musicians bringing the full force of keyboards, bass, drums, guitars, horns and powerful vocals all coming together in the universal language of music. It will be a night of roots, culture and spirit, with classic favorites and a sneak peek of unreleased tracks from the band’s upcoming new album “Candle Burning.” Tickets are $40.

No. 3 — Mike Luce Studio Emerging Artist Series: J.Lyn (Waimea, March 14)

When: 7 p.m.
Location: Kahilu Theatre, 67-1186 Lindsey Road
Don’t miss an intimate, stripped-down acoustic performance by this emerging singer-songwriter featuring elements of soul, R&B and jazz along with her signature smooth and emotive vocal delivery. She will also share songs she wrote for artists around the world and tell stories that inspired them. The music theory and songwriting teacher at Honolulu Community College is a 2022 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee for Alternative Album of the Year. Tickets are just $28.

No. 4 — Mitigating the Threat of Albizia (Hawaiian Paradise Park, March 15)

When: 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Location: Hawaiian Paradise Park Community Center, 15-1946 Lokelani Ave.
Join Big Island Invasive Species Committee Forest Response Coordinator Dustin Swan for a presentation about albizia and participate in a hands-on treatment workshop. Learn why albizia are such a problem in Hawai‘i, how to use a simple and inexpensive method to control non-hazard trees and how to report and push for action on large hazard trees.

No. 5 — “Taking Care” (Hilo, March 15)

Location: Hawai‘i Island Adult Care, 561 Kūpuna Place
This documentary about actor/writer/producers Seth Rogan, Lauren Miller Rogan and their caregiving experience after Miller Rogan’s mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, shows how laughter and love can help navigate life’s toughest moments. The film will be followed by a discussion about challenges of caregiving and information about policies and resources to help family caregivers. Free. Seating is limited. Reservations encouraged.

No. 6 — Junior Gamers Extravaganza (Hilo, March 15)

When: 1 to 5 p.m.
Location: Gam3Escape, 57 Shipman St.
Players experienced in Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon Trading Card Game, Lorcana, “Star Wars Unlimited,” Warhammer 40k, Gaslands, Dungeons & Dragons (with several dungeon masters hosting short games with pre-generated characters), “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” will be available to teach others how to play all of these amazing table top games. If you already play, come hang out and have fun! Special sessions with @tcg808marketplace will teach how to care and store collectible cards. Entry is $5 and includes a slice of Antics Pizza and a bottle of water for all youth 18 and younger with a valid school ID. No. 7 — St. Patrick’s Weekend Hilo Pub Crawl (Hilo, March 15)

When: 4 to 10 p.m.
Location: Meet at Hilo Town Market, 69 Waiānuenue Ave.
If it’s St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, there’s a green beer and shenanigans to be had throughout Downtown Hilo as businesses will cover themselves in clovers and fun, providing discounts, freebies and entertainment. It’s an all-around Irish experience like nothing else, with a pub and art crawl, food, live music and more. No. 8 — The Kilt Lifters St. Patrick’s Day Party (Hilo, March 15)

Come enjoy a bit of the Emerald Isles on the Hawaiian Isles just in time for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. This progressive Irish and Celtic rock band celebrates both island nations with its eclectic and electric Celtic rock sound featured on traditional and original tunes paired with beautiful classic Scottish ballads and Irish traditionals.
