DENVER (KDVR) — Snow has been falling since late Tuesday night, and it’s not stopping anytime soon.
A third Pinpoint Weather Alert Day is on tap for Friday as another system will push across Colorado before tapering off by Saturday afternoon. The biggest impact is expected Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, which means weekend warriors will have to have extra caution while traveling around the state.
According to the Pinpoint Weather team, Denver is expected to receive an additional 8 inches of snow by Saturday, while Castle Rock and Limon are expected to get 15-17 inches.
With more snow comes more traffic problems, and the National Weather Service is warning drivers about travel difficulties.
NWS looked at travel in the Denver metro, Fort Collins-Greeley area, Palmer Divide, Eastern Plains, Interstate 76 corridor and foothills area and rated travel impacts from little to none to extreme over the next two days.
Here is how the NWS believes travel will look like during this November snowstorm.
You may experience difficulty traveling on these Colorado roads
Denver metro
According to the NWS, from noon on Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday, travel impacts will be minor. The worst of it will be felt in the southern part of the metro as more snow is expected to fall.
However, problems can arise by 9 a.m. on Friday through 9 a.m. Saturday when NWS listed the impact as moderate and said major impacts are still possible.
The impact level and snow teeter off by 10 a.m. Saturday.
Fort Collins-Greeley
Travel should feel pretty normal in areas along northern I-25, like Loveland and Windsor. According to the NWS, from noon Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday, there should be little travel impacts as snow remains light.
From 9 a.m. Friday to Saturday at 6 p.m., the impact level moves to minor.
Palmer Divide
Areas like Castle Rock, Larkspur and Elizabeth could experience some of the worst travel impacts.
Thursday morning has been listed as major, according to NWS, as snow continues to coat the area. The impact tapers to moderate then minor from noon Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday.
Then, major impacts return from 9 a.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday. So, stay home on Friday if you can, roads are expected to be snowpacked and messy.
Saturday morning, conditions are expected to improve to minor.
Eastern Plains
Areas like Limon, Akron, Kiowa and Hugo are expected to see the most additional snow from this prolonged storm, and travel is expected to deteriorate.
According to NWS, from noon Thursday to midnight, travel will be difficult with the impact considered major. The Eastern Plains will receive a tiny break from midnight to 9 a.m. Friday when conditions improve to moderate.
However, from 9 a.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, travel will have major difficulties, according to the NWS. Watch for snowpacked roads, ice and low visibility.
I-76 corridor
Areas like Fort Morgan, Sterling and Julesburg are not expected to see much change during this end-of-the-week storm.
According to NWS, travel impacts will be minor from Thursday to Saturday morning. The further east you travel, snow will turn to rain, as well.
Foothills
Areas between 6,000 and 9,000 feet, like Conifer, Evergreen and Genesee will see moderate impacts until noon on Thursday. Conditions will then improve to minor until 9 a.m. Friday.
The NWS said conditions will be the worst along and south of I-70 and will be better towards Estes Park.
When another round of storms arrives Friday at 9 a.m., impacts along the foothills will be moderate. They will stay that way until 9 a.m. Saturday.
If you have plans to travel Friday through Saturday, be prepared for slowdowns, icy spots and more snow. Visit COTrip before you head out to see if any roads are closed.
