COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — It’s going to be a scary good time in Covington with the annual Boo Fest happening at Lakeview Hospital.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the all-abilities Halloween event will give every child, those with and without disabilities or sensory issues, the chance to trick or treat, play games and make arts and crafts.
Children can also participate in the costume contest where they can compete for the titles of “Cutest,” “Scariest,” Most Original” or “Best Group.”
Festival organizers say the event is made possible by the hospital and Adapting and Changing Children’s Environment with Success Solutions (ACCESS), a nonprofit fund of the Northshore Community Foundation.
“We know every parent also wants a chance to see their child experience the events in life that many take for granted,” said ACCESS Board Member Kim Melvin.
Local businesses and community members are invited to get involved in the festival’s operations. They can sponsor a trick-or-treat house or castle to decorate and hand out candy and goods to princesses, ninjas and pirates.
“We are grateful for the sponsor participation and community support of Boo Fest,” said Dr. Aaron Karlin, ACCESS Chairman. “This event provides more than just a fun day for kids; it also teaches acceptance and empathy by creating an opportunity for children who don’t face daily challenges to connect with children who do.”
The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. but early admission will start at 9 a.m. for special needs families.
Admission into the fest is $2 per person.
Fest organizers say all proceeds are used to provide support for families with a child with a disability in four key areas: financial grants, caregiver education an equipment exchange program and peer support.
