SWEDEN — A Maryland man was arrested after a nearly four-hour standoff early Sunday in the Oxford County town of Sweden, according to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
James Godfrey Shepherd, 65, of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, was arrested and charged with elevated aggravated domestic violence assault and creating a police standoff, according to information on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page.
Sheriff’s deputies and Bridgton police officers responded to a residence on Black Mountain Road in Sweden at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving report of an alleged domestic conflict.
When officers arrived, a 64-year-old female with a head injury was leaving the residence, officials said. United Ambulance Service took the woman to Bridgton Hospital, where she was treated for injuries.
Shepherd, who was still inside the residence, refused to establish contact with officers, officials said. Deputies reportedly established a perimeter around the building while awaiting a search warrant to enter the residence.
The warrant was provided at about 5:10 a.m., and when deputies executed the warrant, they located Shepherd inside the residence and arrested him without further incident.
Shepherd was taken to the Oxford County Jail in South Paris.
Information on Shepherd’s bail was not available Sunday.
