Berlin (bundesregierung.de) – “We are a country that processes modern resources,” Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz said during a visit to the Saxon mining authority in Freiberg. He explained that although Germany imported many resources from other countries around the world, some were also to be found here – such as lithium.
In future, lithium is to be mined on a grand – and environmentally friendly – scale in Saxony. During his visit to the mining authority, the chancellor learnt about the planned project that will see the company Zinnwald Lithium GmbH establish one of Europe’s largest lithium mines near Altenberg – by around 2030. The company’s goal is to extract roughly the amount of lithium each year that is needed for around 600,000 car batteries. The German government and the state of Saxony are supporting the project.
