SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– A Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Schenectady County Vietnam Veterans Memorial at SUNY Schenectady on March 29. The ceremony, hosted by the Schenectady County Legislature, will honor those who served in Vietnam, starting at 10 a.m.
“We invite all veterans, service members, their families, and the public to join us in remembering and honoring the sacrifices made by those who served during the Vietnam War,” said Schenectady County Legislator Holly Vellano, Chair of the Military Affairs & Veterans Committee.
County officials said the ceremony will be held on the National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a day observed each year on March 29 to commemorate the withdrawal of the last American troops from Vietnam in 1963.
“This ceremony not only allows us to reflect on the bravery of our veterans and ensure their service is never forgotten, but also provides them with an opportunity to connect with others who share their experiences.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 7,000 veterans live in Schenectady County. Of those 7,000 veterans, about 2,440 of them served in the Vietnam War.
The memorial is located in the back parking lot of the college and includes a plaque, granite benches, lighting and a flagpole. Both veterans and their families are invited to join the ceremony.
