LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A longtime resident near the University of Kentucky is speaking out about what she describes as deteriorating behavior from students living in surrounding houses.
“It’s been probably within the last 15 years,” said concerned resident, Evelyn Griffin. “A bus one time came down here and dropped off their cheerleaders at a party over there at that house,” she said.
Evelyn Griffin, who has resided on Southern Avenue for many years, is experiencing issues with her neighbors as many college students live in nearby homes. While Griffin is accustomed to living alongside students, she reports that recent incidents have escalated.
“They were really great kids, they would party, but they kept it down,” she said. “Here recently within the last five years, the parties have gotten worse, the kids have gotten mean,” said Griffin.
Griffin, who has lived in the area for years, stated the ongoing issue is not something she’s willing to put up with.
“And this may be my last few years of life, and it upsets me because this is how I’m going to go, dealing this these college kids”
In response to Griffin’s concerns, University of Kentucky officials provided a statement addressing the issue. The statement reads:
“We take the concerns of our community very seriously. We remind students at the start of every semester that safety is a shared responsibility. As members of the Wildcat community, students are expected to uphold values of respect and service and, in doing so, are expected to be good neighbors both on and off campus. If there is a specific safety concern happening off campus, residents should call Lexington Police. We work closely with LPD to address concerns related to our campus community.”
In light of her ongoing issues, Griffin has proposed several potential solutions and expressed hope that changes can be made.
“I would like for us to be extended into the UK area, I would like for them to do more on drug abuse and alcohol abuse with the new kids that come in.”
Griffin asking for change as she noted that the problem is shared by multiple neighbors in her area.
