From a “new and better course” to a continued fight, Republican and Democratic members of Congress from the San Diego delegation offered competing views Wednesday of Donald Trump’s election victory.
Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican, said Trump “will steer the nation away from four years of failure and chart and new and better course of opportunity for all Americans.”
Issa, who represents the 48th District in east San Diego County, promised his support for the new President.
“In that mission, he will need partners as determined as he is, and I believe Republican majorities in the House and Senate will be ready to work, lead, and succeed,” Issa said. “America has been through a lot over the last four years, and we have the chance to show our best and deliver a rebuilt economy, a restored national defense, and a real border that protects the homeland.”
But Rep. Sara Jacobs, who represents the 51st District in central San Diego County, expressed disappointment in the outcome and vowed to protect accomplishments of the Biden-Harris administration.
“I know it feels hard right now. I know you may feel scared and alone, but we can’t shut down, close our eyes, and isolate ourselves. Now is the time to stay connected and engaged. We all have a role to play in building a better future,” she said.
“We can still fight for the people and values we care about. We can’t protect everything, but we can still protect some things and we can and will take care of each other.”
