A small dog named Dennis has become a social media sensation after refusing to give his owner his paw in a viral TikTok video. The hilarious reason behind his behavior has left internet users in stitches.
The clip, shared on Saturday under the username @dennis.the.pomchi, shows the poster asking the two-year-old pomchi, a Pomeranian and Chihuahua mix, to give her his paw again and again. He does it a couple of times, but he soon stops, looking at her confused, as if concerned about her unusual behavior.
“Asking my dog to do the same trick over and over again to see his reaction,” reads layover text in the clip. And a caption says: “He’s over it (ignore the towels all over the floor he’s decided he can’t walk on the laminate lol).”
The poster, 24-year-old Emelia Rodgers from London, told Newsweek: “I thought of filming this because he’s always very unwilling to obey commands and always gives me attitude so I thought it would be funny to share!”
Dogs are very smart creatures—not only can they understand on average 89 words, they can also easily learn tricks and commands of all sorts, like giving their paw, sitting down, or even spinning around.
Training pups is a process that requires patience and consistency, but can be incredibly rewarding. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dogs can start training at around eight weeks, and sessions should be kept under 10 minutes.
It’s also important that you always end on a positive note, like with a good treat for example, to create a positive association and make this process more appealing.
If you think your pup is having trouble following you, take a step back and revise their progress. Practicing over and over will eventually reinforce their understanding of the new commands.
Do not punish them when they make mistakes or when they misbehave. Not only do they not understand punishments, but they may also become fearful and stop trusting you, which will only make things worse.
