Rapid intensification expected Tuesday as Hurricane Idalia moves toward Florida.
IDALIA DOWN INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO. THINGS ARE PRETTY QUIET FOR US THIS MORNING. HERE LOCALLY, WE’RE NOT SEEING MUCH IN THE IN THE WAY OF RAIN. A LOT OF CLOUDS AND SOME FOG AROUND. BUT THIS IS THE THE LATEST SATELLITE AND RADAR PICTURE. THE STORM, THE ACTUAL EYE OF THE HURRICANE NOW LOCATED JUST UNDER ABOUT 400 MILES, ALMOST DUE SOUTH, MAYBE A LITTLE BIT EAST OF DUE SOUTH OF THERE OF APALACHICOLA. BUT IT IS MOVING PRETTY QUICKLY OFF TO THE NORTH, NORTH, ACTUALLY, IT’S MOVING NORTHWARD, DUE NORTHWARD RIGHT NOW AT ABOUT 14 MILES AN HOUR. EVENTUALLY, IT WILL MOVE A LITTLE BIT EAST HERE AS WE GET CLOSER TO WEDNESDAY MORNING, IT’S EXPECTED TO RAPIDLY STRENGTHEN INTO A CATEGORY THREE HURRICANE BEFORE IT DOES MOVE INLAND HERE ALONG THE THE BIG BEND AREA OF FLORIDA BY TOMORROW MORNING AND THEN CONTINUE TO TO MOVE OFF TO THE NORTHEAST EAST AND THEN EVENTUALLY OUT INTO THE ATLANTIC. AGAIN, THE END OF THE FORECAST TRACK A LITTLE BIT MORE UNCERTAIN, BUT IT’S POSSIBLE THAT MAYBE IT TRIES TO TO LOOP BACK AROUND TOWARD THE WEEKEND, LOWER CARLEE ALL OF THE THE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ARE CERTAINLY EXPECTED TO STAY WELL SOUTH AND EAST OF US, AS IS THE TRACK. WE ARE EXPECTING SOME HIGH SURF AND SOME HIGH RIP CURRENTS DOWN HERE ALONG THE ALABAMA GULF COAST. FOR US, IT MAY GET A LITTLE BIT BREEZY TOMORROW AND WE MAY GET AN OUTER RAIN BAND OR TWO. BUT LOOK AT THIS, SIGNIFICANT RAIN ASSOCIATED WITH THAT INTO FLORIDA AND UP INTO GEORGIA. UPWARDS OF 12IN OF RAIN, VERY CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL TRACK OF THE STORM FOR US TODAY. WE STILL ARE INFLUENCED BY A STALLED OUT FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT WILL GIVE US AT LEAST THE CHANCE FOR SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS TODAY, ALTHOUGH IT DOES LOOK LIKE COVERAGE WILL BE A LITTLE BIT LOWER THAN THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS. AND THEN ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, WEDNESDAY EVENING, THIS FORECAST MODEL SUGGESTING THAT MAYBE WE’RE ABLE TO GET AN OUTER BAND OR TWO TO BRING US A FEW SHOWERS. BUT MOST OF THE SIGNIFICANT RAIN WITH THE HURRICANE WILL BE WELL EAST OF US AND OVER INTO GEORGIA. SO FOR TODAY, PRETTY QUIET AND DRY THIS MORNING. SOME CLOUDS AND SOME FOG AROUND. WE’LL GO WITH ABOUT A 50% CHANCE FOR SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS TODAY, ESPECIALLY FOR SOME OF OUR EAST AND SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES. RAIN CHANCES DROP QUITE A BIT FOR WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY, AND WE’RE ACTUALLY GOING TO SEE SOME DRIER AIR MOVE IN. SO THE HUMIDITY DROPS A BIT, TOO, FOR WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, AND THEN IT STARTS TO CREEP BACK UP BY FRIDAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND, AS DO OUR TEMPERATURES WITH HIGHS BACK INTO THE 90S. BACK T

Idalia strengthened into a hurricane Tuesday morning and is forecast to rapidly strengthen through the day. Check the video forecast for the latest. HURRICANE ‘IDALIA’Hurricane Idalia, now in the southern Gulf of Mexico, is moving over water with very high heat content. That warmth, along with a weak upper-air disturbance west of the storm, lead to rapid intensification as Idalia moves toward Florida’s Gulf Coast between Cedar Key and St. Marks on Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center says that rapid intensification is likelyin the Gulf, and Idalia may end up being stronger than the official forecast indicates. There is a moderate degree of uncertainty in the intensity forecast. A Hurricane Warning is in effect in Florida from the Middle of Longboat Key northward to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay. The storm surge on the storm’s right-hand side could be higher than 10 to 12 feet as it makes landfall on Wednesday.A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Chokoloskee, Florida northward to the middle of Longboat Key. The Dry Tortugas are also included. Along the panhandle, a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect west of Indian Pass to Mexico BeachThe track forecast is becoming more defined. A trough of low pressure is expected to carve out a weakness in the persistent ridge in place for the past week across much of the country. This will allow Idalia to curve northeast toward Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday. The exact location of landfall is still uncertain, but there is increased confidence it will occur in the Big Bend region of Florida. Idalia’s track far east of central Alabama would keep the area free of any major impacts and enhance the flow of drier and slightly cooler air into the state this week.
