An accident on Interstate 65 Tuesday, blocking lanes on the highway and causing significant traffic delays toward downtown Louisville throughout the morning, remains under investigation by officials as roads reopen.
Lanes reopened at roughly 9:50 a.m. after officers responded to a multiple-vehicle collision on southbound I-65 near University Boulevard at around 5:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found at least five vehicles were found to have been involved in a crash.
Ellis previously said reopening would take an “undetermined” amount of time due to a large amount of diesel fuel that needed to be cleaned up from saddle tanks rupturing on the vehicles.
The preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed two cars were involved in the initial collision on the highway, and the drivers in both cars ran from the scene. Ellis said one left on foot and the other is believed to have been picked up by another vehicle continuing southbound.
He continued, saying three commercial dump trucks traveling south on I-65 approached the initial collision and, with little time to react, created a chain reaction accident. Ellis said a man driving one of the dump trucks was extracted from the vehicle by first responders and taken to UofL Hospital with serious injuries and rushed into surgery.

The other two drivers were not seriously injured and checked by first responders at the scene.
