DENVER (KDVR) — The first snow of the season has arrived in Denver weather, with several inches piled up in the Mile High City Wednesday morning.
While many areas got several inches of snow across the Front Range and in the high country, some areas like Fort Collins and Grand Junction had little to no snow on the ground Wednesday morning.
The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers across the state to be prepared for winter weather driving conditions to last through Wednesday, and possibly beyond with more snow in the forecast for the rest of the week.
Snow across the Front Range
So far, 4 inches of snow have been measured at the Denver International Airport, where the National Weather Service keeps official records for Denver. Other areas of the city have received as much as 8 inches of snow as of Wednesday morning.
Snow on Eastern Plains
The storm prompted several road closures, particularly on the Eastern Plains. US Highway 36, Interstate 70, Colorado Highway 94, Colorado Highway 59 and US Highway 24 had closures in place from the eastern side of the state to the Denver and Colorado Springs metro areas, according to COtrip.

Trucks stopping to chain up blocking traffic
Commercial motor vehicle drivers are legally required to carry four snow chains or adequate alternate traction devices on their trucks from Sept. 1 to May 31 when driving on several roads in Colorado. That includes Interstate 70 west of Morrison.
On Wednesday, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said truckers stopping to put chains on are blocking traffic near Veterans Memorial Tunnel on eastbound I-70, causing a hazard for other drivers.
“Eastbound semi trucks coming down from the Eisenhower Tunnel need to keep their chains on until mile marker 259 in Golden,” the sheriff’s office said in a post on X.
The Pinpoint Weather team expects the snow to taper off in the afternoon, however, some areas of the state are expected to see as much as 5 more inches before the storm is over.
