SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — For several years, Mayor Greg Cromer’s wife, Peggy Cromer has been on a special mission to make sure that kids with special needs have a special place where they can play safely.
That mission has become a reality in Heritage Park, where kids with all abilities can now play!
Slidell Mayor, Greg Cromer’s wife, Peggy is instrumental in making changes in Heritage Park.
“I was at the hairdresser’s getting my hair done when a lady who had kids in a wheelchair was complaining that she had to go to the other side of the Parish for her kids to have a place to play on,” Cromer said.
After this interaction, Cromer decided it was time to make the park more inclusive for kids of all abilities including kids in wheelchairs.
“If you are a family with a child that struggled with certain equipment, we would have an alternative for them. A playground where you can entertain your whole family in one area,” she said.
They’ve added a wheelchair merry-go-round and wheelchair swings.
“To see us embrace and acknowledge these kids have value no matter their limitations,” Cromer said.
She said the inclusive equipment is expensive, so the progress is slow, but any progress is progress.
“I think just looking at the children’s smiles and seeing the laughter is the most rewarding thing,” Cromer said.
