FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — One is in life-threatening condition following a pursuit turned crash Sunday morning.
Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) Officers saw a vehicle being driven recklessly around the S. Barr St. and E. Oakdale Dr. intersection around 1:40 a.m. Sunday. Officers attempted a traffic stop, however, the vehicle did not stop.
FWPD noted a brief vehicle pursuit ensued as the vehicle fled north on S. Lafayette St. At the S. Lafayette and E. Dewald Streets intersection, the pursued vehicle rear-ended a non-involved vehicle: which ended the pursuit.
The driver, 34-year-old Derrick Benson, had minor injuries following the crash. FWPD released later Sunday that Benson has been arrested on Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony), Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony) and Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony.)
Benson’s passenger was in serious condition and later deemed in stable condition by hospital staff.
The driver of the vehicle that was struck was in life-threatening condition and was transported to an area hospital.
FWPD considers speed and alcohol are suspected to be contributing factors in this accident.
This crash is still under investigation.
