Police officials say an NYPD officer shot and wounded an unarmed man who “charged” at officers during a chase in Brooklyn late Friday night.
At around 11:40 p.m. police said they were called to an apparent stabbing at 21 Duryea Place in East Flatbush — the same address listed as a shelter for adult men. Officials said when officers arrived they found both a man who had been slashed in the arm and the alleged slasher, who ran from the scene.
An officer chased the suspect for two and a half blocks when the suspect turned and made “multiple intentional movements like he has a firearm,” before then running toward the police officer, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, who briefed reporters just after 3 a.m. Saturday.
“At this time. the officer had to defend himself. He fired his weapon multiple times, striking the perpetrator twice,” Chell said.
Police retrieved a knife and another “cutting instrument” from the scene, but the suspect was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Police said Saturday they were not naming the suspect prior to official charges being filed. They did say he was 29 and had a criminal record of violence, including some recent slashings. He was in stable condition as of 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, police confirmed.
The man who was slashed only sustained minimal injuries.
“He’s got a slash wound to his arm. He’ll be OK. He was moved to a local hospital,” Chell said.
