MORNING NEWSBREAK | The City of North Charleston has six finalists in its search for a new police chief following the retirement of former Police Chief Greg Gomes.
Sources say a decision may be made within the next two weeks. Final in-person interviews are scheduled for today in front of a 10-person panel. The selection for the next chief will be by North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess, a former city police chief.
The six finalists are from a group of 34 candidates. They include two current North Charleston police officers and one Charleston police officer. Finalists include (in alphabetical order):
- Jason Bruder, a 23-year law enforcement veteran who currently serves as a captain with the Charleston Police Department.
- Ronald Camacho, a 29-year law enforcement veteran who currently serves as the chief of the Chambersburg Police Department in Pennsylvania.
- Karen Cordray, who serves as deputy chief for the North Charleston Police Department.
- Kyle Dowdy, a deputy chief for the Farmington Police Department in New Mexico.
- Angela Johnson, a 28-year law enforcement veteran who, in 2022, became the first African American female promoted to deputy chief at the North Charleston Police Department.
- Jerri Sutton, 25-year member of the Chattanooga Police Department who is chief of staff to the police chief.
