No Shave November has come to an end, it was a month to bring awareness to mens health issues and this year the men at News 10 participated, raising money for the American Cancer Society.
It is so important to bring awareness to these issues and to raise money for these services that the American Cancer Society provides to those dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
Elizabeth Hunter, Director of the Capital Region American Cancer Society explains why it’s so important. “It’s the reminder that people see,” Says Hunter, ” No Shave November, while the funds are so crucial to everything that we do, so is the awareness that’s being raised by you talking about it, obviously having the beard on air.”
Because of the generosity of the Capital Region, we were able to crush our original goal of $1,000, instead, we were able to raise well over $5,000!
These funds are so incredibly important for the American Cancer Society of the Capital Region. “It is just truly invaluable, it’s so important to everything that we do, obviously at the heart of it is our mission to try to end cancer for everyone as we know it,” Hunter said.
While we are all shaving our beards now that the calendar says December, it’s so incredibly important to remember why we participated in the first place.
Hunter says, “You know as little or as silly as it may seem to you know like a beard or just talking about it, is that reminder to someone that you know, I haven’t gotten my screening, and I really need to do it.”
One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, and right now we are seeing about 2/3 of men between 55 and 69 are not being screened.
