RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) — On Wednesday night city leaders came together for a common council meeting to plan a way to stop an incinerator from being built on Rensselaer’s waterfront. But Mayor Mike Stammel brought other news to the meeting saying, “They’re no longer interested in putting this incinerator in the city of Rensselaer down at the port location. So, that’s good news.”
Common Council President, John DeFrancesco explains, “They are not interested in coming because of the climate, the way the residents have reacted in the newspaper story.”
So, in an effort to keep these types of companies from moving into the city, leaders are making moves to keep future endeavors cleaner by proposing a resolution to Local Law 7 of 2024. Mayor Stammel says it is necessary, “To hold a public hearing in order to speak about not having an incinerator plant in the city, any incinerator plants in the city of Rensselaer.” He goes on to say the community he serves is on board with the changes in the industrial law that would prohibit certain types of industry to move in, telling NEWS10’s Reporter, James De La Fuente, “I have not heard of any opposition, whatsoever. I am happy that the common council seems to think that this is the way to go for the future.”
DeFrancesco says a resolution was passed unanimously that will allow city leaders to amend the local law to clarify what is and what is not allowed in the industrial area down by the river. He says, “Once that’s done, you have the public hearing and that will be next,” said the council president. And after that, he says they will vote on the changes they say will protect the city going forward. “It’s just really, to make a stand so we don’t have to worry about this one problem anymore. Because it seems like this is one place where they’re always looking for places to go, and we’re letting them know we’re not the place to go.”
New York State Assemblymembers, Jake Ashby and John McDonald III both support the proposed changes to the city code of Rensselaer. McDonald releasing the following statement, “Assemblymember John T. McDonald III and Senator Jake Ashby sent a letter to the City of Rensselaer Common Council and City of Rensselaer Mayor Mike Stammel in support of the proposed City of Rensselaer Local Law 7 of 2024 that amends Section 179-18 of the Code of the City of Rensselaer relative to Definitions, which thereby clarifies what are Prohibited Uses in the Industrial District. The legislation seeks to address the community concerns raised by a proposal to build an incinerator in the City of Rensselaer.”
The public hearing is set for December 18TH.
