ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– Spring is officially here. As temperatures begin to rise throughout the day and cool during the night, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee are reminding drivers to be safe and keep these tips in mind.
Recommended Car Maintenance Tips:
- Check your tires
- Inspect or replace windshield wiper blades
- Replace air filters
- Test the car battery
- Clean and tighten battery terminals
- Top off transmission, engine and oil fluids
“Warmer temperatures are a great cure for cabin fever brought on by a harsh winter, like the one we had this year in New York,” said Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and GTSC Chair Mark Schroeder. “A lot of New Yorkers will be anxious to hit the road and shake their winter blues. By making sure your vehicle is ready for the season and adopting a few simple practices, you will help ensure your safety and the safety of others on the roads.”
Driving Tips:
- Warm the car to clear any frost
- Slow down on wet roads
- Turn on headlights when windshield wipers are on
- Be aware of potholes, mud, fallen branches or leaves on roads
- Share the road with bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians
- Use caution when backing up; check all cameras and mirrors
According to the state DMV, drivers can always check 511NY for travel information including crashes or slowed traffic and look at traffic camera. Drivers can also check the NEWS10 traffic tracker to plan your route and see traffic delays in real-time.
