MENANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Sunday, March 23 is National Puppy Day. If you’re considering bringing a young pup into your life, staff at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society want you to choose adoption, and make sure you’re prepared to spend forever with your new furry friend.
“You have to think long and hard about how they fit in your life. Puppies need to be going out–little puppies, especially–every two hours or so. Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so you need to be prepared for mouthing, maybe a little bit of nipping,” a” explained Gabrielle DeMarco, VP for Development at the shelter. “A lot of training and obedience goes into raising a puppy. Once they have all of their vaccines, we need to make sure that we’re getting them out into the world and we’re socializing them. So, puppies are a huge time commitment. They’re certainly not for everybody.”
Older puppies can be a good option for those who might not have as much time to spend house training.
While puppies are adorable, DeMarco hopes you don’t overlook the shelter dogs that have been waiting longer for their forever homes and have a few more years of life experience.
“Senior dogs have a lot of joy and love to give to folks and often can be a better fit,” DeMarco said.
