NORRISTOWN, PA—Today, Montgomery County provided an update on its unofficial elections results and reported on elections operations for the November 5, 2024 General Election. A total of 518,835 ballots have been recorded as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
Montgomery County elections workers counted 345,741 in-person ballots from the County’s 426 polling locations before 1 a.m. today and 165,596 mail-in ballots by 8 a.m. today. Results will continue to be updated until all ballots are counted, including fewer than 10,000 outstanding mail-in ballots, which include damaged ballots that could not be scanned.
Provisional ballots will be counted later this week, and approximately 2,000 military and overseas ballots are expected to be returned by the November 11 deadline.
“I am incredibly proud of how Montgomery County administered this year’s general election operations—and our team will continue to deliver as the final ballots are counted in the coming days. We did what we said we were going to do: deliver a safe, secure, and accessible election to the voters of Montgomery County,” said Neil Makhija, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Elections. “The fact that we are able to share mostly complete results the morning after Election Day is a testament not only to the hard work of our election workers but also to our process.”
In the months leading to the general election, the Montgomery County Board of Elections implemented several measures to ensure smooth elections operations and enhanced elections accessibility. This included contracting with a new mail-in ballot vendor to guarantee efficient distribution of ballots, increasing secure ballot drop box locations and satellite office operations, boosting Voter Services staffing, and voter outreach and communications to reduce mail-ballot deficiency issues.
As a result, Montgomery County’s mail-in ballot return rate was approximately 89%, and the deficiency rate mail-in ballots rejected for errors—such as naked, unsigned, undated, or incorrectly dated ballots—was less than 0.5%. Approximately 500 mail-in voters have been contacted directly to verify their identification, which must be completed by November 11.
The Board of Elections will meet later this week to vote to proceed with tabulation and reconciliation, which verifies the results of the election, including that there were not more votes recorded than voters, that all ballots are accounted for, and that all the results are accurate
On Monday, November 11, party and candidate representatives are permitted to review provisional ballots and register any challenges. Then the County will report unofficial results to the state, which will determine the necessity of a statutory recount. During this period, Voter Services also conducts our election code-required audits.
Once tabulation is complete, results are delivered to the Board of Elections, which begins a five-day window where parties are able to file for recounts. No later than November 25 (barring a recount), Montgomery County will convene to certify the election and send official results to the PA Department of State.
