(KRON) — Pete Hegseth, who Donald Trump recently tapped to lead the Department of Defense, was investigated for sexual assault in 2017, the Monterey Police Department said. MPD shared few details about the case but confirmed that an investigation happened.
The alleged assault happened at 1 Old Golf Course Road, near the Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey between midnight and 7 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2017. It was reported to police four days later.
There were no weapons or property involved, and the victim had contusions on their right thigh. Police did not reveal what came of the investigation.
MPD said it is not releasing any more information because it is not required to under the California Public Records Act.
Hegseth, 44, worked as a host for Fox News before being picked to be the defense secretary. His selection for his new role was met with confusion by many in Washington D.C. due to his lack of experience.
Hegseth is a Minnesota native and Princeton graduate who served in the United States Military. He has pushed for making the military more lethal and has questioned the role of women in combat.
