Authorities Friday named a 30-year-old man who was killed when a car apparently involved in a predawn street race ran him down in Ocean Beach.
Michael Ellis of Point Loma was jogging to the west on West Point Loma Boulevard shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday when a southbound black BMW sedan struck him at high speed at Nimitz Boulevard, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Ellis died at the scene.
Following the impact, the motorist continued driving and left the area, according to the San Diego Police Department. At the time of the hit-and-run, according to witnesses, the driver of the BMW appeared to be racing motorists in a Dodge Charger and a Ford Mustang, OnSceneTV reported.
Later in the morning, Navy police found a damaged 2018 BMW abandoned on Canon Street, about a mile south of the site where Ellis died, according to police.
The vehicle had a large dent on its hood and grille, and its windshield was shattered.
