KAPOLEI, O’ahu – The University of Hawai’i men’s golf team is three strokes off the lead and in a tie for third place following the first round of the Kapolei Invitational, Tuesday at the Kapolei Golf Club.
The Rainbow Warriors shot 3-under 285 and trail Texas State (282) and Utah Valley (284) in the 15-team field. TSU’s Sakke Siltala has the clubhouse lead at 6-under 66, one stroke ahead of UVU’s Dan Huddleston and San Diego’s Ryan Abuan.
Senior Tyler Ogawa is two strokes off the lead after a 4-under 68 and a tie for fourth place to lead the ‘Bows. The senior recorded an eagle and three birdies with just one bogey on his round. Anson Cabello and Josh Hayashida each shot even par 72 and are tied for 24th.
Dane Watanabe carded 1-over 73 and is tied for 32nd and James Whitworth posted 5-over 77 and is tied for 65th.
Four Warriors are competing as individuals led by freshman Nathan Szpakowicz, who shot 1-under 71 and is tied for 13th place. Others include Skylor Taylor (74, t-42nd), Garrett Takeuchi (77, t-65th), and Quinn Murray (84, 87th).
The tournament continues with Round 2 on Wednesday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
