NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New information became available on Tuesday regarding the murder of a pregnant woman back in 2016.
The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office announced on Nov. 12 that a jury found 31-year-old Jermaine Brisco guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree feticide in the 2016 deaths of his girlfriend, 22-year-old Raven Veal, and their unborn child.
This guilty verdict comes as a sigh of relief for to the victims’ family, after Veal’s then-3-year-old daughter witnessed her mother’s murder.
Brisco shot Veal while she and her daughter were inside her car on Sullen Place in Agliers, prompting Veal to escape.
“He then yanked that young toddler out of the vehicle and left her on the side of the street and then proceeded to drive over Raven’s pregnant body again and again,” said Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams
The guilty verdict comes after two failed attempts. The first trial ended in a mistrial and the second in a hung jury.
“Raven Veal should be here. So should her unborn child, and after eight long years, we can finally give this family some closure and some relief after their perseverance and faith in the justice system,” said Assistant District Attorney Adele Krieger.
Prosecutors attribute part of their success to a new witness. A representative for the insurance company Primerica took the stand, telling jurors what Brisco had done before he murdered Veal.
“In the months leading up to Raven’s death, the defendant, Brisco, was seemingly preoccupied with ensuring that she had a valid life insurance policy,” said Williams.
In addition to the murder charges, Brisco was also convicted of obstruction of justice and cruelty to a juvenile.
A second-degree murder conviction in Louisiana comes with a mandatory life sentence.
