(KRON) — A man was shot by San Mateo and Burlingame police department officers after authorities responded to reports of possible gunfire early Saturday morning. The man was listed in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon, according to police.
The San Mateo Police Department (SMPD) responded at 2:53 a.m. to the 800 block of North San Mateo Drive after receiving a 911 call reporting possible gunshots. Arriving officers contacted a man who was walking near the intersection of Jefferson Court and State Street, who then pointed a firearm at the police and began to run, SMPD said.
Officers called for backup before chasing after the suspect northbound on Jefferson Court. After reaching Peninsula Avenue, the officers lost sight of the suspect. Shortly after, a Burlingame Police Department (BPD) officer found the suspect yelling in the street near Bayswater Avenue and Myrtle Road while holding a firearm, SMPD said.

Officers with the two city’s departments gave commands to the suspect and attempted to deescalate the situation, according to police. The suspect did not comply, SMPD said, and an officer fired a less-than-lethal rubber projectile at the man.
The suspect did not drop the firearm after being shot with the rubber projectile, police said. Two officers, one with SMPD and one with BPD, then used their service weapons and shot the man. After being struck by police gunfire, the suspect fell to the ground, where officers were able to secure the man’s loaded firearm.
Medical aid was provided by officers on the scene before the suspect was transported to a local hospital. He was listed in stable condition as of 2:48 p.m. Saturday.
The recovered firearm was determined to be a .45 caliber Glock pistol.
San Mateo police are continuing to investigate the suspect, while the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the police’s use of force.
The officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave during the district attorney’s investigation, which is standard protocol, SMPD said.
