The Department of Homeland Security recently arrested Mahmoud Khalil at Columbia University for his rhetoric in support of Palestinians. President Trump and the bootlicking Secretary of State Marco Rubio both cited the permanent resident by name. Rubio called for revoking Khalil’s green card because his actions were contrary to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
During any given administration, millions of us disagree with current policy and voice that. More than half of this country disagrees with our foreign policy on the conflict in Gaza. Are we all next?
Rubio himself staked his political career, successfully, on the lie that his parents were political exiles from Cuba. He might respect the value of free speech more if his parents were in fact exiles. In reality, they were just plain immigrants who arrived here two years before Castro’s quick rise to power and suppression of free speech.
Whatever people think of Khalil’s spoken ideas, this should be chilling to all Americans. Never before in our history have plainclothes agents greeted both citizens and residents like this in the night over personal expression. The so-called protectors of free speech, Trump, Rubio and Musk, are coming for us. They will come to our college campuses. They will come to our homes. They will come with their doublespeak.
If we can’t all speak our minds, the cause of democracy is lost. It’s time for Trump supporters to start supporting American values again and object to this un-American behavior.
