Thursday’s Five Facts
[1] One person dead and two injured in structure fire in northeast Albuquerque – Around 1 a.m. Albuquerque Fire Rescue was called out to an apartment building on Marquette near Wyoming to reports of the fire with people trapped inside. AFR says the fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, but one person died and two others were taken to the hospital. AFR says investigators are working to find out what caused the fire.
[2] Baseball team suspended after player accused of urinating in opponent’s water jug – The Rio Rancho JV baseball team is now suspended indefinitely after one of their players is accused of urinating in the opposing teams water jug. The Rio Rancho HS JV team played La Cueva last week when the incident is said to have occurred. Rio Rancho Public Schools confirmed to KRQE News 13 that the team was suspended on Wednesday. The C team will take the place of the JV team for the time being while the incident is investigated.
[3] Thunderstorms, snow, & colder air coming to New Mexico – The next stronger storm system will move farther south while moving eastward in New Mexico tomorrow with rounds of more-widespread rain and snow with lower temperatures being accompanied by some gusty winds throughout the first half of the weekend before eventually warming up while drying out with calmer conditions.
[4] Albuquerque speed cameras are slowing drivers but less than half of tickets are paid – The city of Albuquerque says there are currently 20 speed cameras in place and more coming in the future. Since 2022, the city has issued more than 400,000 tickets to speeding drivers. Officials say some of the busiest roads are also starting to slow down, but not everyone who gets caught speeding pays the fine. They say less than half the tickets are paid.
[5] Looking back on Val Kilmer’s time in New Mexico – Hollywood legend Val Kilmer died at 65 years old, leaving a legacy behind full of iconic roles in films like Top Gun, Tombstone, and Batman Forever. But he would later escape from Los Angeles to a nearly 6,000-acre ranch east of Santa Fe with stunning views near the Pecos River. He said his love affair with the southwest dates back to his California boyhood and family camping trips to New Mexico.
