KENNER, La. (WGNO) — A Kenner mother has been arrested after two children were allegedly found to have cocaine in their system.
The Kenner Police Department reported that officers responded to a New Orleans hospital on Nov. 21 in reference to a 4-year-old child being treated for a fractured arm in an incident that happened in Kenner.
Detectives said they spoke with hospital staff, who said the child’s mother told them that the child was jumping on a bed when she fell off and began feeling pain in her arm.
According to police, the 4-year-old was found to have cocaine in her system after a urine test was performed.
KPD officials said the Department of Child and Family Services then responded to the hospital and requested the child’s 2-year-old brother also be tested, which allegedly yielded a positive result for cocaine.
The mother, identified by the KPD as 34-year-old Ashley Burguera, and her attorney reportedly declined an interview with police at the hospital.
During an investigation, KPD detectives said they found “small bags and bottle caps of a white powdery residue which field tested positive for cocaine” during a search of Burguera’s home.
According to police, the bags and bottle caps were found in areas that small children could easily access.
Following the search, a warrant was obtained for Burguera’s arrest on two counts of illegal use of controlled dangerous substances in the presence of a person under 17, second-degree cruelty to juveniles, cruelty to juveniles and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burguera was arrested on Nov. 26, and the children were taken into temporary DCFS custody.
