Jannik Sinner has won the second Grand Slam title of his young career, proving to be the strongest player in the world at this moment. Although Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz has won two Majors this year – the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships – he hasn’t been as consistent as the Italian ace throughout the season.
Despite not having played his best tennis at the 2024 US Open, the 23-year-old from San Candido made a difference at decisive moments and won the tournament losing only two sets along his run (againt McDonald and Medvedev). The World number 1 had no problems against American ace Taylor Fritz in the final, despite an attempt to react by his opponent in the third set.
Jannik has more than 4000 points of advantage over the second in the ATP ranking and already in October he could be sure to close out the season as the world number 1. The 2024 Australian Open champion arrived at Flushing Meadows with low expectations, even though he had won the Cincinnati Masters 1000 before the US Open.
Sinner found the right pace as the rounds went by and the premature eliminations of Alcaraz and Djokovic made his journey easier. The quarter-final against Russian ace Daniil Medvedev was a kind of early final, since the Russian was the only one who could scare Jannik on these courts.
An exceptional 2024
Although the season is not over yet, Sinner can be proud of the level shown this year and the progress made. Champions make the difference at important moments. Jannik Sinner is proving to be one in these years. The high-spirited man won his second Slam of the season and career at the Us Open after two good weeks, despite having presented himself on the eve with “low expectations” for everything that had happened publicly on the doping case. The 23-year-old from San Candido was stronger than this, he put everything behind him and focused exclusively on himself: the 7 consecutive victories, with only 2 sets granted to opponents crossed in the way, earned him the title of New York (the first Italian player to do so).
In the decisive and fundamental matches, the Italian athlete has grown a lot over these years. The statistics on the finals played and won highlighted the solidity of the number one in the world, which has obtained 6 trophies this year in as many final acts disputed: Australian Open, Rotterdam, Miami, Halle, Cincinnati and the US Open. Also impressive is the figure of the career finals, which has been updated to 16 wins and only 4 losses (the two in Miami against Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and Daniil Medvedev in 2023, Rotterdam and the one of the Finals against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic). In addition to having 100% in this season, Sinner boasts 80% of wins in the closing acts of major tournament rounds. Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik’s current big rival, played the same finals (20) but lost one more at the moment (15-5), thus having 75% of wins. The numbers are really impressive and underline the value of the story that the Italian ace is writing.
The beginning of a new era
“This title for me means so much; the last period of my career was not easy. There is my team who supports me every day, the people who are close to me” – Jannik said in the press conference at the end of the match. He also added: “I love tennis, I practice a lot for these kind of stages, but off the court there is a life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt who is really not feeling well health wise. I don’t know how much I’ll still have her in my life. It’s so nice I can still share a positive moment with her.
So many big wins for me this season, starting off with Australia. Playing so well there gave me confidence. The work never stops. I know I can still improve, as we saw today, a couple of things. But you have to be proud with what you have and the rest you have to work for it. I can’t wait for my continued process.”
The World number one will take a break after the extraordinary triumph in New York. The 23-year-old from San Candido will not play the Davis Cup this week, but he will go to Bologna to support his friends and compatriots. His next official event will be the ATP 500 in Beijing, where he started his rise last year. After Beijing, the Italian ace will play the Masters 1000 in Shanghai before returning to Europe for the last part of the season.
