Frankfurt (dpa) – German investigators have cracked down on cybercrime by conducting searches in all of Germany’s 16 federal states. As the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office Frankfurt reported, they are pursuing a large number of cases of fraud in online trading, data espionage, data theft and money laundering. The searches were carried out at the premises of 58 suspects in Germany. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser spoke of a great success in the fight against cybercrime.
The central focus of the international investigations was the criminal marketplace “Genesis Market” via which, among other things, stolen log-in data to various e-commerce and online payment services had been sold. It was the world’s largest platform of its kind and existed since 2018. It was seized and shut down by the US authorities on Tuesday. According to Europol, the identity data of more than two million people had been offered on the platform. In total, the day of action saw 119 people arrested worldwide and more than 200 buildings searched. Besides the FBI and the European police authority Europol, those taking part in Operation Cookie Monster included the Dutch, British and Australian police.
