MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Long-awaited repairs to Shin Point Road in Marshall County remain at a standstill.
Homeowners say that unfinished work led by County Commission Rick Watson has created more dangerous conditions.
Neighbors told News 19 that they have had enough of the promises and want the commissioner to finish what he started.
“It’s just a mess right now and it’s pretty treacherous,” said homeowner Benjie Taylor who has lived on Shin Point for more than 30 years.
As previously reported, the road has been in dangerous condition for decades so much so that Taylor’s senior neighbors find it difficult to leave their driveway.
Taylor says he could barely contain his excitement when he saw road repair equipment in February to finally make repairs.
“I actually stopped and shook his hand because hopefully something was going to be done,” said Taylor.
Homeowners say they were assured in February that it would be near completion in weeks, but the repair has stalled, leaving the road in such dangerous conditions that seniors living on the mountainside road say they can no longer receive emergency services, mail or deliveries to their front door.
Watson said that records show that the original developers failed to properly register Shin Point Road with the county, therefore, making it more difficult to manage the repair.
“It’s actually I believe it’s an abuse of government power to not provide them with a safe and convenient road to their homes,” said Marshall County resident Joel Kennamer.
Taylor says that he spent many hours trying to repair the road on his own, but he became overwhelmed by the cost of materials and he’s looking for the commissioner to finish the job.
After hearing the plea from the homeowners Watson promised to finish the road in two weeks’ time.
“It’s been a challenge and but it’s something that’s going to happen and I hope it’s something that the people will be proud of,” Watson said.
