High winds have caused damage and blowing dust across parts of New Mexico Friday. Winds will be dying down tonight, with rain and snow chances Saturday.
Winds have gust over 70 mph today in eastern parts of New Mexico causing areas of blowing dust and wind damage. Albuquerque’s strongest wind gust was around midnight last night, peaking at 61 mph with gusts over 50 mph at times through the day today. Several inches of snow also fell in the northern mountains with this storm system. Winds are still gusting over 50 mph in parts of eastern New Mexico, but they will very slowly continue to die down into the overnight.
By Saturday morning, rain and snow showers will move into western and northern New Mexico. Snow could fall as far south as I-10 in southwest New Mexico with a few flurries in the Albuquerque Metro as well. More isolated, but widespread, rain and mountain snow showers will develop Saturday afternoon. Accumulations of rain and snow will be light. Northwest winds will be breezy to locally windy Saturday, with wind gusts up to 40 mph. Temperatures will stay cool Saturday but warm up Sunday afternoon as sunny, dry, and calmer weather returns.
Winds start picking up again Monday as another storm system moves towards New Mexico. Monday will also be the warmest day next week thanks to the wind. The storm will move into the state Tuesday, bringing southwest wind gusts as high as 60 mph. This will again cause areas of blowing dust and a high fire danger Tuesday afternoon. Spotty rain and snow showers will move through the northern half of the state. Temperatures will also fall again into the middle of next week with warmer weather returning again Thursday.
