WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State head men’s tennis coach Darragh Glavin has selected Sonam Phuntsok and Joan Grosset as assistant coaches for the men’s tennis program for the 2024-25 season.
Phuntsok comes to Wichita after spending the past three years as the assistant coach for the New Mexico Lobos, serving under the recently retired Chris Russell.
“I’m very excited for Sonam to join us,” said Glavin. “He’s got some great experience coming from New Mexico and I’m excited to add him and his expertise to our staff this year.”
In his three years at New Mexico, Phuntsok helped the Lobos to a 40-29 record during his tenure, including going 12-5 in Mountain West action. This past year, UNM went 14-10 and Phuntsok helped Arda Azkara to back-to-back Mountain West Player of the Year honors.
Prior to his time in Albuquerque, Phuntsok spent time as an assistant with the Seattle University men’s and women’s tennis programs. At Seattle, he helped craft one of the best recruiting classes in the history of the men’s program and coached their No. 1 doubles pair to all-conference honors.
Phuntsok played collegiately from 2012 to 2016 for Lewis and Clark State College, an NAIA institution in Lewiston, Idaho, where he was team captain his junior and senior year and led his squad to a Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) conference championship.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Lewis and Clark and completed his master’s at the University of Arizona in sports business leadership.
Grosset, a native of Chambery, France, comes to Wichita State after a year as the full-time assistant at the University of Nebraska – Omaha.
“Joan’s a young, excited, and hungry coach,” said Glavin. “He’s coming off a great year as the assistant at Omaha and brings youth as well as experience to our staff next year.”
In his lone year as a Maverick, Grosset helped coach the Mavericks to a 12-11 record and oversaw two players who were named to the 2024 All-Summit League team in Bryan Kuntz and Ryoma Mishiro.
In his tennis playing career, Grosset played for Emmanuel University, an NCAA Division II University in Franklin Springs, Georgia. In his time as a Lion, Grosset helped his squad to the highest national ranking in team history when they were ranked 48th in 2022. Grosset totaled 17 singles wins and 23 doubles wins as a Lion, and he was a four-time ITA All-Academic selection while at Emmanuel.
Grosset graduated from Emmanuel in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management. He will serve in the graduate assistant coach role with the Shockers.
