DENVER (KDVR) — Monday night, a Denver Public Schools board meeting will take public comment on the decision to close seven schools and restructure three others.
Meanwhile, walkouts and rallies have been happening at schools across the city. Another rally is scheduled for Monday.
Students and teachers from West Middle School are planning a rally at 3:25 p.m. They will rally in front of the building and read speeches before walking to the district admin building where public comment will take place.
A teacher at West Middle School told FOX31 her concerns about the closure.
“West has a generational connection to the community and offers many opportunities to our middle school students that they will no longer have access to if we are moved to DCIS Baker. There are no athletic facilities, no established bilingual programs to serve our newcomers, no ties to the Hispanic community, no food bank or community closet, nor many other services and assets that make the West Campus a community center. Families will be split up by this move, and my students will be scattered to seven different schools,” said the teacher.
The board is scheduled to vote on the recommendation on Thursday.
All last week, the board went to different schools, hosting comment sessions so the communities could give their input. This week, the superintendent will do a similar rotation.
