ROGERS, ARK. (KNWA/KFTA)— Following a fire at Marck Industries that erupted on Tuesday, many have expressed concerns about the health risks associated with exposure to potential chemical contaminants released into the air.
Dr. Anand Venkata, a pulmonologist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, said people who are young and healthy with minimal exposure to the smoke and ash are likely to tolerate the situation without significant symptoms.
“They may experience only minor symptoms that typically resolve over time,” Venkata explained.
However, he emphasized the increased risk for vulnerable populations.
“Babies, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions such as lung or heart disease may experience more pronounced side effects, even from relatively low exposure,” Venkata said.
Deputy chief of operations at the Rogers Fire Department Dusty Qualls advised community members to avoid the fire grounds and mentioned that the full composition of materials burned remains unknown. “It’s hard to say exactly what’s in it,” he said, urging people to steer clear of the affected area.
Venkata further highlighted the importance of understanding exposure duration.
“If you are not in close proximity to the fire, your risk is minimal. However, if you experience abnormal symptoms, seek medical attention,” he recommended.
As a precaution, he suggested reconsidering outdoor activities such as hiking or walking until the situation stabilizes. For those who must go outside, wearing a mask can help reduce exposure to potentially harmful particulates.
