MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A suspect has been arrested and charged for allegedly supplying fentanyl that led to the overdose death of a man in Madison County.
According to court documents, 25-year-old Javonte Johnson was arrested and preliminarily charged with Dealing in a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony.
An investigation was launched on Dec. 25, 2024, after officers with the Anderson Police Department were called in response to a suspected drug overdose death. When authorities arrived on the scene, they reportedly found an unresponsive man, later identified as Trace Lightfoot.
An autopsy report later confirmed that Lightfoot’s cause of death was initiated by intoxication by fentanyl, acetyl fentanyl, flurofentnyl, cocaine, bromazolam and alprazolam.
Detectives spoke with a woman who said she was with Lightfoot on the night of his overdose. The woman recalled that Lightfoot had picked her up and they visited a residence located in the 400 block of W. 34th Street to purchase xanax and Blue 30s/fentanyl pills.
The woman reportedly told officers that she believed Lightfoot had purchased fentanyl pills from an individual at the same residence in the past, court documents said. When they arrived, the woman said Lightfoot exited the vehicle and entered the residence. When Lightfoot emerged, the woman said he was allegedly carrying two baggies containing xanax and fentanyl.
Lightfoot and the woman then went back to her residence, where they allegedly smoked marijuana with a friend. Shortly after their friend left, the woman said Lightfoot proceeded to crush the fentanyl pills so they could inhale them. The woman said Lightfoot allegedly inhaled the powder from both of the pills, with the woman saying she was “worried it would be too much,” according to court documents.
Court documents state that the woman recalled Lightfoot immediately acting “highly impaired” as he fell in and out of sleep. She attempted to wake him up, but he remained unresponsive. The woman administered two doses of Narcan to Lightfoot before calling 911, court documents said.
The investigation led detectives to Lightfoot’s phone, which revealed a text message conversation between the victim and a contact police identified as Javonte Johnson, according to court documents. Investigators also sifted through a series of Snapchat messages where Lightfoot and Johnson discussed meeting to obtain fentanyl pills, court documents said.
According to online court records, Johnson appeared in Madison Circuit Court 4 on Monday for an initial hearing.
