DENVER (KDVR) — Not all journeys are created equal. A report analyzed the distance NFL teams had to travel during the 2024 NFL regular season and the Denver Broncos found themselves amongst the farthest travelers of the 32 NFL teams.
The study, conducted by RotoGrinders, used Google Maps to analyze the distance of a one-way trip from home stadium to opponent stadium. International games were determined by using a distance calculator.
The Broncos occupied the 10th spot on the list of 32 teams, having traveled approximately 13,042 miles for away games and return trips back to Denver.
People either love or hate travel, but there is no doubt about the effects it can have on a person physically. Turbulent airplane naps and limited leg space aren’t at the top of doctor’s lists for recommendations on resting and recovery.
While there are several outliers, the trend that can be observed is that teams located on either coast traveled the farthest and teams more centralized in areas like the Midwest, accumulated the least amount of miles.
Another variable that must be taken into account is team schedules as the NFL is a league that does not have every opponent play each other in a season. The NFL schedule only requires that every team face off against the others at least once in a four-year period, according to the NFL.
International must be taken into consideration now that the NFL hosts several games in countries outside of the United States.
Californian teams were the teams most affected by travel, occupying three of the top five most traveled spots. The top five traveling teams included:
- Los Angeles Chargers — 17,324 miles
- Los Angeles Rams — 16,833 miles
- Seattle Seahawks — 16,313 miles
- Miami Dolphins — 15,523 miles
- San Francisco 49ers — 14,620 miles
The five teams who had to travel the fewest number of miles included:
- Cincinnati Bengals — 6,154 miles
- Pittsburgh Steelers — 6,214 miles
- Indianapolis Colts — 6,628 miles
- Cleveland Browns — 6,962 miles
- Tennessee Titans — 6,972 miles
