In 2017, Secretary Shawn Garvin was appointed to Gov. John Carney’s cabinet as the top man at the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). That agency is tasked with protecting and managing Delaware’s natural resources, protecting public health and its state parks system. DNREC also regulates business activities like air quality permits, major industrial development along the coast, licensing sewer facilities and the Brownfields program. Garvin’s career spans more than two decades at state, local and federal levels. He was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as the Mid-Atlantic region administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
