DENVER (KDVR) – The University of Colorado Buffaloes were one of the last two teams competing for a spot in the Big 12 Championship. The winner of the BYU versus Houston game would determine whether CU of Iowa State would secure their spot in the final.
A win from BYU broke a tiebreaker between CU and Iowa State, sending Iowa State to the Big 12 Championship. Had BYU lost, the tie would have fallen in favor of the Buffs.
Going into this weekend, the Buffs were one of four teams with a 6-2 record in Big 12 matchups, and generally, the tiebreakers were not in their favor. Additionally, there were five teams with 5-3 records that were still technically in contention for making the championship before this weekend.
The winner of the Big 12 Championship will get an automatic bid to play in the College Football playoff, but it’s not all sorrow for the losing team, which will still get to appear in a bowl game.
The Buffs accomplished what they had to on their final game day to put them in the running for the championship, ending the season with a 52-0 win over Oklahoma State.
On the final day, Shedeur Sanders collected another school record by surpassing the single-season passing mark, according to ESPN. Travis Hunter finished the year with the school’s single-season record for receiving touchdowns with 14, according to CU. Hunter remains a contender for the Heisman Trophy, while Sanders picked up his own piece of hardware on Saturday.
Bowl game matchups will be determined in the coming days, as some depend on the outcome of conference championships.
