Berlin (dpa) – Gun salutes at the airport, “God Save the King” at the Brandenburg Gate: the British King Charles III and his wife Camilla are beginning their three-day state visit to Germany. This is the first trip abroad for the new king. He will be received at the Brandenburg Gate – the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany that a state guest will be received there by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Charles III also plans during his three-day stay to travel to Brandenburg and Hamburg. The German president will accompany the guest of state on his entire trip, which is not customary and is seen as a sign of special esteem.
Germany and the United Kingdom are close partners and the royals are traditionally popular here. Charles himself knows Germany well, having visited the country some 40 times. The fact that he is coming to Germany in his new capacity as king, even before his coronation on 6 May, is regarded as an important signal following Brexit – as the UK’s withdrawal from the EU is known.
